School Start/End Time Adjustments for 2017-18 School Year

During its regular meeting on Wednesday, July 19, the Leavenworth Board of Education voted in favor of adding 10 minutes of instructional time to the school day at all grade levels. Beginning this year, classes at Leavenworth High School and Warren Middle School will begin at 7:50 a.m. and release at 3:00 p.m. Elementary students will begin at 8:10 a.m. and release at 3:20 p.m.

Lawson Elementary Hosts Leavenworth Public Schools Education Foundaiton

The Lawson Pioneers graciously hosted the monthly meeting of the Leavenworth Public Schools Education Foundation Board of Directors earlier this week. After a full slate of business, it was time to hear from the Lawson principal, Laura Batson, and students representing various programs of the school. C.J. and Emma shared about the Lawson Leaders, their fundraising efforts, and classroom mentoring they provide to younger students. Mrs. Batson shared, “Young students are now coming up to me asking how they can be Lawson Leaders. It is a great thing to watch our older students working so positively with our younger students.” The Foundation BOD was highly impressed with the happenings at Lawson, and took action to support the fundraising efforts by donating $500 to their cause. Lawson Leaders Seek Donations to Help Children in Foster Care

Fifth grade students in the Lawson Leaders group at Lawson Elementary are working on a service project. They are raising money to purchase "Sweet Cases" to support the Together We Rise organization. Sweet Cases are duffle bags given to children in foster care to carry their belongings. The cases also include items such as a blanket, stuffed animal, hygiene kit, coloring book, and crayons. Lawson Students Earn Pizza Party

This week, Lawson Elementary students had the privilege to attend a pizza party in honor of their exemplary behavior and demonstration of respect throughout the year. Students were treated to pizza, juice boxes, and goody bags to thank them for their great behavior.

Laura Walker Named Lawson Teacher of the Year

Congratulations to Laura Walker, Lawson Early Childhood Special Education teacher, who was recently named as the Lawson Teacher of the Year. She will compete against three other nominees for a chance to be the district's Elementary Teacher of the Year.

Members of 291st MP Visit Lawson Students for Breakfast

Soldiers from the 291st MP Battalion at Ft. Leavenworth visited their friends at Lawson Elementary for breakfast and conversation this week. The 291st had "adopted" Lawson and members of battalion regularly visit the school and help with school functions. Students enjoy their time talking and playing with them and were glad to have them at breakfast this week.

Lawson Third Graders Learn About Native Americans

Third graders at Lawson Elementary have been learning about Native America Culture, both past and present. They started off learning about how they migrated to North America roughly 25,000 years ago and learned about the various tribes that have existed throughout the country over time. Recently they welcomed a members of the Wyandotte tribe who spoke about the culture and traditions of their tribal members.

Lawson Students Welcome GoNoodle Visitor

Recently, third Graders in Sarah VanBaale's class at Lawson Elementary welcomed a special guest from GoNoodle. GoNoodle is a web-based educational tool to get kids moving and learning at the same time. Cameron Waldo, a representative from the company, visited Mrs. VanBaale's classroom to show students some of the new games and features the company is now offering. Students played some of their favorite games with Cameron. They also asked him questions about what it is like to work for the company and if he knows any of the "famous" people from the GoNoodle videos.
