Lawson Students Build Candy Race Cars

This week, students at Lawson Elementary welcomed their regular guest, Brenda Taxeras from the K-State Research & Extension Office for another science lesson. This time students built their own race cars using cardboard for the chassis, straws for the axles, and peppermint candy for the wheels. Students then raced the cars to see whose design went the furthest.

Lawson Kindergarten Students Welcome Treats from Holiday Visitor

Kindergarten students at Lawson Elementary received a surprise from a special holiday visitor recently. Students learned about the European tradition of leaving shoes out for St. Nicholas Day. Students left their shoes out in the school's hallway, and sure enough St. Nicholas came to fill their shoes with candy and treats. He also left a stuffed animal for each student.

Lawson Fifth Graders Lead the Way

Fifth grade leaders at Lawson Elementary are lending a helping hand. Recently the students helped lead morning meetings in second grade. Students at Lawson start each school day with a morning meeting in their classroom to prepare themselves for learning that day.

Kindergartners Learn About Community Helpers

Lawson Kindergarten students have been learning about "community helpers" who have important jobs in Leavenworth, such as police, fire, and EMS services. This week students welcomed members of the Leavenworth Fire Department and Officer Heather Vogel from the Leavenworth Police Department to talk about their jobs and how they got into the profession. Students also had the opportunity to explore the equipment they use as part of their job, including a fire truck and police car.

Students Celebrate Veterans

In honor of Veterans Day, Kindergarten students at Lawson Elementary welcomed LTC Bryan Batson. LTC Batson is a 23 year veteran of the United States Army and just returned from a 12-month tour in Korea. During his visit at Lawson, LTC Batson shared the book "Don't Forget, God Bless Our Troops" by Dr. Jill Biden. LTC Batson also brought treasures from some of the countries he has visited during his military service, including Germany, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Bosnia, and Afghanistan.

Lawson Students Enjoy Fun Field Trips

First and fourth grade students were lucky enough to enjoy fun field trips last week. First graders visited the Lamborn Farms pumpkin patch in Leavenworth where they picked pumpkins, ran through a hay bale maze, and saw a number of different farm animals. Fourth graders attended Paradise Park in Lee's Summit, MO where they participated in a number of interactive lessons and explored the facility's rock wall and other attractions.

Lawson Students Celebrate First Quarter Successes

Last week Lawson Elementary students celebrated meeting expectations and exhibiting good behaviors. Students with fewer than four office referrals were rewarded with a fall-themed movie and snack, a Jack-O-Lantern relay race, and game of Bingo. Students enjoyed this reward and are eager to exhibit good behaviors so they are able to attend the next party in December.

Lawson Students Shine Bright at Dance

Students showed off their best and brightest at the school's recent neon-themed dance. Students were encouraged to wear neon colors, and those in attendance received glow sticks as a part of the dance theme. Students and parents enjoyed dancing the night away. The event also supported a good cause as Student Council collected one canned food item from each attendee to donate to a local food pantry.

Lawson Students Welcome Business Owner to Share Expertise

Last week, students at Lawson Elementary welcomed a special guest and some of her feathered friends. Miss Dee, owner of JoJo Dee's Pets in downtown Leavenworth, brought some of her prized birds to share with second graders at the school. Miss Dee shared information about the habitats and lifestyles of these beautiful creatures. Miss Dee's visit was part of a comprehensive effort to have more community involvement at the school.
